Occupational Therapists

Name: Denise Cox, OTRdenise

Where you are from originally, and where do you live now? I am from Brownsburg, Indiana, west of Indianapolis. I have lived in Nashville 24 years but am moving to Columbus, hopefully this summer. I attended University of Evansville and graduated from Indiana University with my degree in Occupational Therapy. I have practiced mostly in pediatrics for the past 31 years.

What got you interested in working in pediatrics and for A Step Ahead? I enjoy my job here because we all love kids and love the work we do.

How long you’ve been working for A Step Ahead? I have worked in this community for 25 years and for A Step Ahead for the last 5 years.

Areas of expertise: In the past I have served on community and church boards particularly in programs for children. I have done training and community education for different areas of child development, growth, feeding and motor skills for preschools, hospital and parent groups in the community. I also have a lot of continuing education particularly in feeding and sensory integration.

Hobbies and interests: I have a grown son and daughter with the first grandbaby on the way.

Name: Betsy Long, OTR

Where you are from originally, and where do you live now? I grew up in Louisville, KY and graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with my Occupational Therapy degree in 1999. Then I married and moved to Columbus all in the same year.

What got you interested in working in pediatrics and for A Step Ahead? A former co-worker introduced me to A Step Ahead in 2001 after a previous pediatric facility in town had closed.  I enjoy pediatrics because I enjoy children, including my own 2 daughters. Children have so much potential and usually don’t know limitations, so they almost always can be taught new things and are willing to try new experiences that open up doors for progress. I love working with a population where learning is almost so obvious you can see it!

How long you’ve been working for A Step Ahead? Since 2001

Hobbies and interests: My husband and I enjoy raising our family in this “big little city”. We enjoy our church family and being active with friends and kids’ school functions as well. Columbus is very family oriented and we enjoy taking opportunity of the parks programs, biking on the people trails, and doing some small suburb gardening.

Name: Martha Montgomery, OTR martha

Where you are from originally, and where do you live now? I grew up in Brownsburg Indiana, graduated from IU, and I moved to Seymour 20 years ago.

What got you interested in working in pediatrics and for A Step Ahead? I realized my passion for pediatrics shortly after graduation and starting my first job in occupational therapy.  Children are filled with hope and energy and I love spending time with them.  After staying home with my 5 active children for several years, receiving an elementary teaching certificate and working in education for the past 4 years, I knew that it was time to return to pediatric occupational therapy.  My goal was to work with a dynamic and skilled team.  When I began to inquire about pediatric OT in this community, everyone told me about the excellent reputation of A Step Ahead Pediatrics.  I knew that this was the position for me as soon as I met the awesome staff and toured our excellent facility.

How long you’ve been working for A Step Ahead? I started working for A Step Ahead Pediatrics in December.  I’m so excited to get to know the friendly and helpful staff and the wonderful children and their families.

Areas of expertise: I have extensive experience with cerebral palsy, brain injury and school therapy.  I believe my greatest strengths are in my understanding of children and families due to the variety of roles I have served with children

Hobbies and interests: I love spending time with my family.  I have 2 sons at IU, a son and daughter in high school and a son in elementary school.  We attend swim meets, band and choir concerts and travel as much as possible.  We especially enjoy camping and hiking in the mountains.  Cooking and eating are among our favorite things to do.

 Name: Lynn Weber, MOT, OTRlynn

Where you are from originally, and where do you live now? I grew up in Homewood, Illinois, which is a south suburb of Chicago.  I graduated from Indiana University with Bachelors in Psychology and University of Indianapolis with Masters in Occupational Therapy.  I currently live in Indianapolis, IN.

What got you interested in working in pediatrics and for A Step Ahead? Throughout my clinical experience in graduate school, I rediscovered my strong passion for working with children.  I believe that children are remarkable and fun.  I especially enjoy watching them grow and discover new things and how proud they get when this occurs.  Children are excitable and willing to try and for me to be part of this experience is very rewarding.

How long have you been working for A Step Ahead? I started working for A Step Ahead in April 2014.

Areas of expertise: I have gained experience in working with children with fine motor deficits as well as development delays during my clinical rotations.  I am very interested in expanding my knowledge in sensory processing disorders and oral motor issues relating to eating.

What are your hobbies and interests? I love spending time with my family, friends, and my pets.  My husband and I really take pleasure in traveling to other countries and learning about different cultures.  I also enjoy participating in outdoor activities such as camping, canoeing, hiking, and biking.
